Helmet Sales in Japan – SIMPSON – Blue Star

This post is about the Simpson helmet design sold in Japan.
I've been using Simpson helmets for most of my life since I was young.
The reason is simple: I love the design.
The all-black look that resembles Darth Vader from Star Wars is really cool.
The white helmet with a black shield, reminiscent of a Stormtrooper, also looks incredibly stylish.
When I ride my motorcycle, I like to pay some attention to my gear and helmet.
I want to wear a Simpson helmet.
For a leather jacket, I want to wear a Vanson.
These might be unnecessary obsessions.
Nowadays, Simpson helmets are available in designs made specifically for Japanese riders.
About 20 years ago, you had to import them to get one.
Currently, I’m using a model that can be purchased at motorcycle shops in Japan.
The differences between the Japanese version and the Western versions include the head shape and the shape of the eye opening.
Now, NORIX, the official distributor in Japan, seems to be actively selling them.

Are Simpson helmets uncool?

The unique design of Simpson helmets may seem unattractive to those who don't like that style. The fact that they are often used in U.S. drag racing and car racing is a key reason why they have a strong fan base in Japan. About 20 years ago, buying one in Japan meant paying nearly twice the price of a domestic helmet. In terms of functionality, they gave the impression of being about half as practical as Japanese helmets. Still, I’ve continued to use them loyally.

Not everything about Simpson is cool, though. I personally think their touring jackets are not stylish. This might be influenced by trends, but it's my personal opinion. Unlike their helmets, Simpson jackets are easy to buy in Japan. There are many riders wearing jackets that don't fit their body size well, often featuring the large 'SIMPSON' logo. It looks awkward when these riders, with ill-fitting jackets, are showing off the Simpson logo while riding. Seeing that frequently has made me associate Simpson jackets with a negative image.

There are plenty of stylish jackets out there, not just from Simpson. Riders often buy jackets a bit too large so they can layer underneath, but it would be more practical to wear heat-tech or electric heating gear for cold weather. There was a time when having a Simpson logo on something automatically made it look cool, but as time goes on and the brand becomes more widespread, it starts to lose its appeal, which is kind of strange.

This helmet was released in limited quantities by NORIX, the official distributor in Japan. While it features an American-style star, it’s an original design made for Japan. Other designs in the lineup include:

When I bought mine at a retail store, there were stacks of them in stock, but they sold out quickly. Even though it was marketed as a limited edition, a revival version also seems to have been released. Despite this, as of 2022, new ones were being traded at about 1.5 times the original price in auctions.

I really like this helmet, so I’ve been using it well beyond its recommended lifespan. As of 2022, it seems that NORIX has not been selling any new graphic versions of the helmet. When they release another cool limited-edition color, I’ll consider replacing mine.

As for my review of its usability, visibility behind you is poor. Simply moving your neck or eyes slightly makes it very difficult to check what's behind you. This might be quite a challenge for middle-aged riders with stiff necks or back issues.
