I am the owner of a Honda motorcycle [CBX1000] who lives in Hiroshima City, Japan. I am posting about FCR carburetor and CBX1000 customization. I also post about things other than cars and motorcycles. We will post information that will make bikers around the world happy.
Pingel Power-Flo fuel petcock for FCR – My favorite part
I took some photos of the fuel petcock area in my rental garage, so I will write about that. It should be somewhat useful for those who want to introduce a Pingel petcock to older generation motorcycles. Since I like Pingel petcocks, I have posted several blogs about them. Depending on when I posted, my preferences might have changed, so there may be discrepancies in the content. Please understand if there are any inconsistencies. I will provide a brief overview of the Pingel petcock. Please also check out related posts. If you're considering purchasing a Pingel petcock, this might be helpful.
[Important] Which Pingel Petcock Should You Choose for the CBX1000?
First, let me highlight an important point. The thread size should be 1/4 and the angle should be 4000. You can use the Pingel genuine adapter. In Japan, the stock for the CBX1000's genuine fuel petcock was around 100 units. The price is around 11,000 yen. Additionally, when installing the Pingel petcock with an adapter, the petcock protrudes when you remove the fuel tank, making it impossible to place the tank flat. This puts strain on the petcock. For installation, I use an M18 pitch 1.0 nut, which I thin down to use as a locknut. This is also used to adjust the orientation of the petcock.
There is a difference in flow rate compared to a new Honda genuine petcock for the CBX1000, but the difference is not significant enough to enhance performance. The flow rate of the stock petcock is sufficient. The durability of the Honda genuine petcock is proven, as it has lasted for over 40 years.
In conclusion:
"Pingel petcock is installed for cosmetic purposes."
Functionally, there is little advantage. Depending on the type of motorcycle, a Pingel petcock might provide significant benefits. If you have a vacuum-type fuel petcock, it is better to replace it. For other brands of manual petcocks, you can get one for less than half the price of a Pingel petcock.
Motorcycles also value aesthetics.
The luxury feel of the Pingel petcock is wonderful. However, when it comes to replacing a high-quality original petcock on a classic motorcycle like the CBX1000, there is some doubt about whether it is worth the change. Conversely, some might feel that it disrupts the balance and harms the aesthetics.
Motorcycle aesthetics should be considered as a whole, not just focusing on one part. If the motorcycle has many polished parts overall, it will likely have a well-balanced appearance. If the motorcycle is mostly in a stock-like condition, not replacing the petcock might maintain better balance. If you want a custom touch, the Pingel petcock might make the motorcycle look sharper and cooler.
The Pingel petcock is a part with a high dress-up effect.
Why install a Pingel petcock on a CBX1000?
I considered installing the Pingel petcock because it might increase the fuel supply and improve performance. There was indeed a positive change. However, since the stock petcock is sufficient, the upgrade doesn't offer significant benefits. The reason I continue to use it is because I have already replaced it and want to keep using it. The gleaming metal part looks great.
In the case of my CBX1000, it is not stock but rather a CBX1000 that resembles the stock appearance. I have polished the wheels and applied chrome plating. Changing the fuel petcock does not disrupt the balance.
